A few years back I started working with Prime 1 Studio on some incredible statues based off of some concept design and also some covers I’ve done in the past.
This week, they released another of the statues up for pre-order, the absolutely massive Superman vs Doomsday 1/3 scale statue. This thing is HUGE! I’m wondering if I ever have room for it in my office. It may have to be displayed in the middle of our kitchen table…which my wife will surely love!
Originally we designed something different for this statue, which was more of a “Superman Alone” design. But Prime 1 wanted to do something different and had an idea for these cool battle scenes with our trinity of heroes battling a foe. So we took the Superman model they had already created, re-posed it and created something new with all sorts of battle damage and destruction
Here is an early sketch. The company had the Superman Hush statue in development so they felt the idea of a solo superman statue would be repeating themselves and I agree. The Battle Statue is something different.
The design eventually grew to something else beyond this early sketch, but I dont want to show those designs just in case Prime 1 wants to make that statue one day. I guess it all depends on how this battle statue sells first.
Here is a rough sketch of the basic idea.
I also took my basic body design from the DC Essentials action figures and slapped on some color to show the basic design. I wanted it to resemble the old Fleischer Bros. Superman costume from the old cartoon, which still remains to be my favorite vision of Superman. In the end, they decided to go with a more traditional costume color scheme, which always sells and I was totally fine with, especially since you can remove the logo and plop in the black version!
Here is an inked piece I did for the showcase showing off the pose as a cover. Maybe it’ll be used on the box art or something!
The statue is now up for pre-order on Prime 1 Studio’s webstore. You can visit the store with this link.
